History and Heritage
The history and heritage sector showcases unique and unrivalled stories and experiences from the people who helped shaped today's Northern Territory. Pioneering history is dotted across the Red Centre and along the Stuart Highway, from rich military history in the Top End involving Australia’s defence against the Japanese in WWII, to our 65,000 year old history of Aboriginal art and culture, chronically capturing historical events across the Territory.
Tourism NT focuses on raising awareness of the importance of this sector as it is proven to enhance the visitor experience within the Territory. The military history is unparalleled, as it was the only place in Australia that was heavily attacked in WWII with remnants spread far and wide across the Darwin region. It is also home to the first place of Aboriginal land rights, following a nine year battle by Aboriginal stockmen at the Wave Hill Walk Off in 1966.
Promoting these experiences through drive itineraries, key anniversary events and product packaging throughout our other key sectors will help showcase the value of this sector to the local, domestic and international markets towards growing the experiences on offer.
