Big Bash headed to Alice Springs
- 15 September 2017
The clash, to be held on 13 January 2018 at Traeger Park, is the first time the popular cricket franchise will be played in the Northern Territory.
As well as the Big Bash League (BBL) fixture, the clubs will also play two Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) matches the same weekend.
The matches are part of a new $1.2 million deal between the Northern Territory Government and the Adelaide Strikers to facilitate a BBL fixture in the Red Centre in both 2018 and 2019.
NT Cricket CEO Troy Watson said hosting a Big Bash fixture in Alice Springs was a major coup for the region.
“It is a very significant announcement. The WBBL and BBL have been growing exponentially in the last few years recording record crowds,” Watson said.
“To have a game with this pedigree for competition points, is a real coup for the town and cricket in the NT."
The fixtures are part of the NT Government's commitment to bring top-class sporting events to the NT to attract more visitors and boost tourism numbers.
Traeger Park hosted the Sheffield Shield final earlier this year as the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers made it a hat-trick of titles, while the Australian Men's Cricket Team recently held an intensive training camp in Darwin ahead of its tour of Bangladesh.
