The NT Government has announced a $103 million stimulus package to turbocharge the Territory’s tourism industry.
The historic investment will increase visitors to the Territory and improve our tourism facilities, attractions and parks, making them more enjoyable for Territorians to visit with friends and family.
The Turbocharging Tourism Action Plan
aims to create new jobs for the local civil and construction industries, with millions of dollars’ worth of new infrastructure related tourism experiences to be rolled out throughout the Territory.
Starting immediately and to be rolled out over two financial years, Turbocharging Tourism will deliver:
- $26.57 million for smarter and more targeted tourism marketing including increased promotion of our attractions, new marketing campaigns with key airlines and increased funding to attract more lucrative business events;
- $56.24 million for new tourism infrastructure related programs creating more memorable experiences for our visitors, particularly in our parks and reserves; and
- $20.78 million to further enhance our existing festivals, events and other experiences to cement the Territory’s reputation as a vibrant and exciting place to live, work and visit.
Tourism is a key economic driver for the Northern Territory, contributing 17,000 direct and indirect jobs or 13 per cent total employment as well as 10 per cent to the NT’s gross state product (GSP).
In 2018, the Territory economy will undergo a transition with short-term economic indicators suggesting a dip, following a reduction in major project workforces based in the Territory. To maintain a $2.2 billion tourism visitor economy through to 2020, action must be taken to stimulate the Northern Territory economy now, and support the long-term growth of the tourism industry.
Turbocharging Tourism is an Action Plan to drive our economy, create more jobs and support local businesses.
