Explorer of the Seas docks in Darwin
The Explorer of the Seas has made her maiden call to Darwin, bringing more than 3,200 passengers to the city.

The massive cruise liner is one of the biggest to ever visit Darwin.

The vessel has a gross tonnage of 138,000 with a capacity of 4,000 passengers and 1,180 crew and offers incredible features like an ice skating rink, FlowRider surf simulator and a rock climbing wall.

Passengers were welcomed to Darwin today with market stalls, live music and cultural performances, in the City and Waterfront precinct.

With its tropical climate, Darwin receives larger ships in the main season from October-March and a number of small, luxury expedition cruise ships using Darwin as a home-base to explore the remote Northern Australian coastline from April-September.

This season the Top End will welcome 82 cruise and expeditionary ships, providing a huge tourism and economic boost.

According to Cruise Lines International Association Australasia’s Economic Impact Assessment 2017-18, the cruise sector brings an estimated $171.9 million a year to the local economy.
