Tourism is the Northern Territory's largest employing industry, providing directly and indirectly jobs for 15,600 people (11.8 per cent of employment). It drives economic growth at local, regional and Territory-wide levels through the creation of income, employment and investment opportunities.

The visitor economy is worth approximately $2.2 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) and is responsible for 9.5 per cent of total NT Tourism Gross State Product (GSP). The visitor economy, which is supported by the tourism sector, includes visitors who come for leisure, business events, corporate travel, to visit friends and relatives and other purposes.

Tourism NT works closely with a range of partners outlined in this section.

Regional Tourism Organisations

Tourism Top End (TTE) and Tourism Central Australia (TCA) are the Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) of the Northern Territory. TTE and TCA are not-for-profit, innovative membership-based associations that assist a wide variety of stakeholders including individuals, businesses and organisations with the growth of the NT tourism industry. The RTOs are partly funded by the Territory Government (Tourism NT & DTBI) to service tourism operators through business development, capacity building and support programs, industry networking events and advocacy on behalf of the tourism sector.

Tourism Top End (TTE)

TTE is the Regional Tourism Office serving the area commonly referred to as the 'Top End' which includes Darwin, Kakadu, Arnhem Land, Litchfield, Katherine and surrounding areas. It is a member based organisation, committed to growth and development of tourism in the Top End. TTE also facilitates the Visitor Information Centre in Darwin CBD, providing complimentary and comprehensive information and booking services.

Tourism Central Australia (TCA)

TCA is the Regional Tourism Office serving the area commonly referred to as the 'Red Centre' which includes Alice Springs, Uluru, Tennant Creek and surrounding areas. It is a member based organisation, committed to growth and development of tourism in Central Australia. TCA also facilitate the Visitor Information Centre in Alice Springs town centre, providing complimentary and comprehensive information and booking services.

Business Development Partners

Department of Trade Business & Innovation (DTBI)

The Department of Trade, Business and Innovation stimulates and supports a competitive, responsible and productive business, industry and employment environment. For tourism operators, the Start, Run, Grow program is there to assist you in starting or growing a business and to provide access to information, training and workshops.

If you are a NT business, Aboriginal enterprise or not-for-profit, you can get help from a small business champion who can assist you to identify the types of support your business can access. DTBI also offer support with networking, contacts, information, tools and resources.

The Commonwealth Department of Industry, Innovation and Science (AusIndustry)

AusIndustry provides services from government agencies to support businesses across all industries throughout Australia, connecting them with information, grants, registrations and support to help businesses succeed.

The Regional Manager is based in Darwin and provides businesses across the Northern Territory with information about the assistance programs they and other organisations, provide. The Northern Australia Tourism Initiative programs delivered by AusIndustry are targeted towards businesses in the tourism industry.

Business Enterprise Centre, Northern Territory (BECNT)

Business Enterprise Centre NT is able to provide independent, detailed business advice based on assessments of the clients business. The BECNT aims to provide business owners both personal and sustainable business success through networks, targeted business workshops and ongoing mentorship opportunities. 

This low-cost, confidential service to the client aims to resolve and improve financial, management and operational functions of a client’s business. Where the need is identified, the BECNT can refer a business to a specialist professional advisor (solicitor, accountant, digital engagement, human resource manager) to provide specific advice to the client.

Indigenous Business Australia (IBA)

Indigenous Business Australia is an Australian Government statutory authority set up to assist Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander owned businesses with economic and development opportunities. IBA offers a range of services including grant opportunities, tailored workshops and business advice.

Aboriginal Tourism Committee

Aboriginal Tourism Committee (ATC)

The Aboriginal Tourism Committee play a key role in guiding implementation of the NT Aboriginal Tourism Strategy 2020 - 2030 (Strategy). The Strategy's vision is for the Northern Territory to be the undeniable Australian leader in the Aboriginal tourism sector. 

The Aboriginal Tourism Committee also contributes to developing sustainable and prosperous Aboriginal tourism enterprises across the NT, leading to positive economic and social outcomes for Aboriginal communities.
